Môr Ni Gwynedd
Lead Organisation:
Bangor University
Area:
Gwynedd Coast
Investment Priority:
Supporting Local Business
Protecting the present and building towards the future
What is the background?
The aim of the project was to support and develop the fishing and seafood sector in Gwynedd, ensuring that it is more diverse and sustainable for the future. Through research, and working closely with fishers, local businesses, the food sector and the wider community, the project aimed to identify the challenges facing businesses and suggest ways to safeguard jobs and strengthen the ‘green’ economy in a sustainable way.
What was the support?
The needs of the industry to make it viable for the long term were identified by working with fishing communities across Gwynedd. The team made valuable contacts with the seafood industry – fishermen, restaurants, markets and fishmongers. Training was held for fishers and related businesses in traditional skills in order to promote and protect the maritime heritage of the area.
A Môr Ni Gwynedd stand was present at various events in Gwynedd to promote the local food industry with well-known chefs showing how to cook seafood.
Also a ‘Seafood Trail’ was created, with maps of routes to promote places to eat local seafood around the coast. Promotional material for the trail is available at tourist sites and restaurants, and a website to promote the businesses has been created.
What difference has this made?
A strong link has been created between the seafood supply chain and the businesses around the Gwynedd coast. The collaboration between the University, Cyngor Gwynedd and fishing communities, has laid solid foundations for the long-term development of the industry.
Môr Ni Gwynedd | Bangor University
I was given the opportunity to work with the delivery team locally in Nefyn and in Porth Penrhyn, Bangor to raise awareness and educate members of the public about our local seafood.
It was a very positive experience for me. It was great to encourage children (and adults) to eat locally caught seafood, and I was proud to tell them how the fish were caught and provide an overview of working on a fishing boat.
